Yup... Morel....

It is one of the four really safe wild mushrooms in the Northwest. If it looks anything like a Morel it is a Morel and good to eat. Throw away the very bottom where the dirt starts then slice it and fry it in butter.

Mmmm... morel

Used to fill 5-gallon buckets w/these when I was a kid in IN.

1. Dredge in flour
2. Fry in butter
3. Eat 'til it hurts!

Man, I miss those. Time to call ma & pa...

Yep, looks good. Make sure

Yep, looks good.

Make sure you know what a false morel is for your hunting. You don't want to eat those.

Just google false morel for pictures, they can look just like a morel, the cap does not attach to the stem at the bottom of the cap though.

yay, i can eat it!

Thanks everyone, fantastic replies.
Here is a good article found on the false morel.

It will not be hard to tell the difference, given this info.
My husband just asked a question, can you eat the morel raw? I'd think so.
Sounds much more delicious to saute in butter though.

This is cool, I love mushrooms! But I have never gone mushroom hunting before. I hope I can find some more of these. Last fall our neighbor asked if he could go hunting for Chanterelles, he said he did find a few.
Last year I found out you can eat the tops of fiddlehead ferns, before they open up.
We also get all kinds of berries at our place, besides blackberries I have also seen thimbleberries, salmonberries, and black raspberries.

that's a lot of tasty

that's a lot of tasty berries. Last fall I figured out the peak thimble berry crop comes as the leaves turn yellow in the fall.

berries

I've got spring fever really bad!!

last year after reading this post on berries I planted LOTS of berry plants (raspberries, blue berries and strawberries). I cannot WAIT til spring and they start sprouting green things!!

this weekend I planted my tomato and pepper seeds. more green sprouts! can't wait!!

mushroom ID'ing

that's a gorgeous morel, I wish I had 10 pounds of those.
This is the best book on the subject:

Fischer is amazing. I've been collecting mushrooms for a few years here now in western NY, and any time I find a new crop that I'm not sure about, I can email him a picture and he'll respond personally! 7 of the 10 best wild mushrooms live here in NY. If you catch the bug, get this book. mushrooms, like many things you should trust but VERIFY. I had a 12 # cluster of hen-of-the-woods this spring... mmmmmm

Morels have a rich, creamy flavor that is deliciously earthy, nutty, steak-like- and it’s this awesome taste that makes the morel mushroom No.1 with mushroom lovers.

Hen

yes, hen of the woods are yummy. get the fischer book... so much good info. GREAT recipes, too. HOTW mushrooms are great... but I prefer the young growth, less woody. I'm also cultivating oyster mushrooms. you can buy 2 pounds of Oyster mush at store, walk through your woods with a cordless drill and a 1/2" bit and drill rotting oak logs and pack a pinch of oyster mush into hundreds of holes...
just find logs that are shaded and in a moist place. I have some by my creek that come spring time, could actually become money making...
mmm... oyster mushrooms with butter and garlic....

oyster mush

where can you buy it, WNY? what kind of store?

they've got them at our local grocery store. Right next to the shiitake's. Most good grocery stores that carry mushrooms should. They're not very expensive, b/c they're so EASY to cultivate :)

Is this an Oyster?

I found this mushroom growing on a standing dead tree by my house. My best Google search tells me this may be an Oyster mushroom. What do you guys think?

Here is the bottom.

I'd like to go back and get this suck if it's edible, but I'm not really sure if I IDed it properly.

Noyster...

I think it's not an oyster mushroom. I haven't perused my old fungus books yet but it looks unlike the oyster mushrooms that I have always wanted to find out here on the left coast. Get a better photo from below with something to reference size. What is the texture and how solid is it....PS. No matter what I say, don't eat it til you're more sure than I am. I have always been extremely conservative on my culinary mushrooms and yet have had the squirts on several occasions. For the folks who have made worse errors than I, the only remedy is sometimes death.

DON'T eat that mushroom til you know EXACTLY what it is!

Email this micologist, Dave Fischer , he's written many books.

send him your pictures. david@americanmushrooms.com

He'll respond quickly and tell you exactly what is is. He's done it many times for me in the past. buy his book, trust me, worth the $$
