Skip Ellsworth is a fifth-generation log home builder. His great, great grandfather (Ruben Jones Ellsworth) built the first log home in Nasua Iowa in 1853, as mentioned in the book called The History of Butler and Bremer Counties, 1853.
The accumulated knowledge of four generations of log home builders has been systematically passed on to Skip. In addition, he has spent his entire life researching and developing the various methods of log home building. We feel that he is the world's foremost authority regarding this craft.
Skip taught his famous two-day class in log home building for 108 consecutive terms via the Experimental College at the University of Washington.
After retiring from the University of Washington's Experimental College, Skip occasionally taught via many other governmental institutions, including but not limited to the following: Seattle University -- Seattle Central Community College -- North Seattle Community College -- Shoreline Community College -- Highline Community College -- Everett Community College -- Bellevue Community College -- and many other governmental agencies.
Articles about Skip's various successes have been included in many major magazines and newspapers, such as; The Wall Street Journal (over one full page about Mr. Ellsworth in the West Coast Edition), U.S.A. Today, Sunset Magazine, Playboy Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Family Circle, Seventeen Magazine, The New York Times, Log Home Guide, Home Building Magazine, Rodale's New Shelter Magazine, Americana Magazine, The Log House Builders Journal, Hudson Home Guide, This Old House Magazine, View Northwest, Pacific Magazine, Washington Magazine, Country Journal, Practical Homeowner, The Chicago Tribune, The Miami Herald, Nation's Business, etc.
Locally, many articles have appeared in The Post Intelligencer, The Seattle Times, The Everett Herald, The Seattle Daily Journal Of Commerce, The Tacoma News Tribune, Northwest Exchange, The Seattle Weeklv, The Bellevue Journal American, etc.
On two separate occasions, Skip and his log home were featured in extensive articles (with many color photographs) in The Pacific Magazine Section of The Seattle Times. One of these articles appeared on June 9,1991.
The following are some comments on the socio-political of America today written by Skip's friend Bob Johnson:
This will be just a quick note in response to your request for information concerning my "socio-political-economic" philosophy. I can’t imagine why anyone would be interested in my philosophy about anything except log houses. Therefore, I don’t think that my "other-than-log-house-philosophies" should be included in your log house publication.
At best, if I tell people what my philosophies are, they will probably think that I’m just an eccentric old man.
At worst, my philosophies will probably make a lot of people angry.
However, I promised that I would send you a few comments… so here they are.
As I begin this assignment (Gee, I feel like I’m back in college.), I take solace in the fact that for an old man like myself, the amount of time I spend writing the following political comments will probably be far less harmful to me than an equal amount of time spent with alcohol, fast cars, or wild women.
