Colorado Land For Sale

We have land for sale near Rabbit Ears Pass; it is on the east side about 30 miles from Steamboat Springs. We are building our log house on the lot next door. I will be honest and tell you the land is priced fair – not cheap. You may be able to get most of your logs from the 3 acres; they will be beetle kill Lodgepole Pine. That is what we are building with. If we don’t sell the lot before we finish the current project, then we will build another log house on it and sell it with the house.

Colorado land/ beetle kill

I just watched a program on the beetle kill in Colorado. Seems to be devastating. The largest ever recorded and uncontrollable! They said that most of the forest and property around there will die from the bettles. Must be awful to watch the forest die before your eyes. What will happen with the properties around you? What about the lands and forest around the property you have?

Beetle Kill

Most of the forest around us is about 70% mature lodgepole pine and that is what the beetles are killing. The rest of the trees are Aspen, Spruce, Fir and young Lodgepole and those are not affected by the beetles. In most places the actual result of the beetle kill is a good thinning of the forest. The forest will change for sure, but mother nature will compensate by the other trees. Everyone is cleaning the dead trees as fast as they can to alleviate the fire danger and the Aspens are filling in the bare spots. We have a lot of young Engelman Spruce and Sub-alpine Fir growing on our properties. There is also a lot of mature Fir and Spruce that are healthy. The drought in our area over the last few years and the warm winters have added to the problem. A good old fashioned cold winter will kill the beetles and stop the spread. The last beetle uprising was in the mid sixties.

It is interesting to note that it is not actually the beetles that kill the tree. A blue fungus that the beetles carry is what kills the tree. If you have ever seen a beetle killed tree you can see the blue stain in the outer third of the wood.

The good news is that logs in our area are usually pretty cheap. Free for cutting in most areas. Mother nature will not be denied.

Ditto

Ditto on what Dean says. Mother Nature has a way of cleansing herself out and us lucky LHBA fools can get free logs here in Colorado. The best way to rid the beetles is get some extremely cold winter temps. Last year was good and cold and this year looks promising too. Treating the trees wiht chemicals is not the answer and IMO only makes things worse.
