Does anyone support themselves doing this?

Could taking this log home builders class lead to employment opportunities?

For example, has anyone ever taken the class, then hired himself out to do the job for someone else who can't or won't do it himself?

If so, then How does one find such opportunities after taking the class?
If so, then would the "class graduate" need any amount of "experience" first before someone would hire him to build their cabin?

In this situation, would the "class graduate" at that point be like a general contractor?

Yes there are a couple member I know of that build these for a living.(& I'm sure many more I don't know of)

Most, I would guess, at least build a starter cabin, their own personal home etc, before building for anyone else.

I think there is another article on building for profit but I can't seem to find it.

Second, There have been a number of folks who have come on these forums looking for someone to build a log home for them the right way. They have cash in hand, just not the time to do it. Usually most of the builders are too busy to take them up on that. Another point is that building a custom home to a clients specs can be very challenging(for a lot of reasons ;)- it is often easier for a log home builder to construct a 'spec house' and sell it on the open market when completed. This may not answer all of your questions directly but do think about it a bit.

To answer your first question, do folks support themselves doing this? The answer is yes. It may take a while to get the ball rolling in it, and keep your head afloat. I know a number of builders(stick frame builders) who are on tough times right now because they did not plan ahead and are too far into debt. Take it slow and plan ahead.
