Rocklock, I missed you a few weeks ago.

Dave, I heard you stopped by a few weeks ago. While you were on Camano I was in Kona fishing for Marlin. I would love to stop by and see what you have done since I had last seen your home. As you probably saw I have 37 trees down and still have 30 to go. If your chain sales fall through I will take all you have left. If you are still in Rain country shoot me an e-mail. , Kent.

I emailed you too. I'd like to come by this weekend with my wife to check out your place and pick up the chains I spoke for earlier. Anyway, I'll look at anything not spoken for, and if Mr. Simple Mind needs me to pick something up for him, I'd do so and spot you the cash, that way he doesn't have such a strict deadline.

See you soon,

Peter

Thanks for the offer peter.

Thanks for the offer peter. I am in the middle of two and a half weeks off, wish I had a house to work on. I am getteing board. The drive will be nice, plus I have been trying to meet up with Dave since spring. This has been a crazy summer.

Thanks,

Is that an Alaskan Mil in your picture? If so, how long does it take to cut one pass? I haven't decided if I want it or a protable saw mill.

AK Milling

10acresATV's picture

It is an Alaska mill. Of course the answer to your question is a "it depends" one. Factors like the size of your powerhead, what kind of wood, and how sharp your chain is make a big deal of difference. The first cut usually takes the most time because you have to set up the rails. If the log is over 14 feet, you have to leap frog the rails and that is time consuming too. Then I usually make the second and third cuts with the AK mini mill. Now, once you have a 3 sided cant, it goes pretty quick. To give you an idea, I spent the better part of a day cutting 6 2"x24"x12' maple slabs last fall. That maple log was too big for me to skid so the AK mill was a good way to go. However, could I have skidded it 100 yards over to a portable band mill, we could have cut it up in about an hour. Another thing -- it takes a bit of care to make straight and true cuts with the AK mill and you should just forget about trying to quarter saw anything. With a band mill like a Wood-Mizer getting your cuts straight and square is pretty much a no-brainer. I haven't used a Procut but that may be a good intermediate way to go.

Cheers,
Greg

rocklock, I need some chains!

StressMan79's picture

Rocklock, The chains are exactly what I need. I'd take 2 of the 3/8ths variety, if you still have them. I might be able to get up to CAMANO, I live in mukilteo, and will definitely be at the next members meeting.
