I am thinking or a 3" PVC jacket with a 2.5" PVC piston working inside... driven by a rod powered with wind/ solar electric unit on the surface...with an o-ring and some kind of poppet/check valves.
Should be Cheap and easy. and able to pump up from 20 ft down to ~100 ft up. I imagine the pump unit would extend below ground, to the water (shallow well) .
I did a quick search for designs, but didn't find anything. I could make something work, but if someone else already has, then this is pretty dumb.
If anyone has links to a how to site, hook me up!

The simplest way to avoid
The simplest way to avoid mixing check valves with the piston itself is to install two check valves to either side of a "T", and on the third leg of the "T" you'd make your cylinder and piston. You could make the whole thing of PVC, but the cylinder would be better if you used brass, and for the piston seals use a pair of opposing cup leathers. (one handles suction, the other pressure)
If you want your pump submersible, it's more complicated. Aermotor uses an inline double ball check arrangement.
Stressman, I know this
Stressman, I know this probably isn't what you're looking for but figured I'd throw it out there anyway:
