I have been told that you cannot insure a self built log home in Indiana ? Is this true?

Nope that would not be true.

We were insured by State farm, switched last year to progressive because better rates.  No issues at all (morgan county IN)

I'd heard for years...

I'd heard for years that Josephine County in Southern Oregon had a bunch of inspectors that would chew me up and spit me out and that I'd never have a legal house.

We will put the roof on our hand-built log home in the middle of September. So far the inspectors have done everything to help except offer to pound nails. I think the key to your success will probably be using a proven design and plans that have an engineers approval. That's what we did. When we are done we will own the best looking log home in Grants Pass (owner claims a certain literary license) and we will own it free and clear with no mortgage.

There are gazillions of this style of owner/builder log homes near Seattle and I can't imagine that Indiana is somehow more strict on their building requirements that King County, Washington. Indianan's always seemed to me like a fairly level-headed crowd. Betcha $50 you could make it work like it oughta.

On the other hand . . .

Perhaps bribing them with Costco Muffins is the trick. Who are those good looking people up there on the lift? <smile>
