Here's a side door that leads into the kitchen. 

It is nice to have a side door off the kitchen, leading to a deck, so the kids and run in and out of the house without dragging dirt into the living room, and also so the chef can easily tend a BBQ on the deck.  A well thought out traffic and use plan.
