Sorry I missed this posting back in July...my wife, a friend and I took the Feb 09 class. My wife and I live in Elk River, MN and plan to build our home wherever we find a (relatively) good deal on land in the west/northwest metro. We can't go too far out, since we'll both be working in Hennepin county. I've been gathering and planning for a shed build first, while we get out of debt, the Dave Ramsey way! Then, we'll find our lot (at least 2, preferably 5+, acres) and dive in! I'll be interested to find out more about log sources in the area (MN/WI) and, just as importantly, building code issues. I'll be looking forward to these discussions and more. Great to see more area members!
P.S. Afton is a nice area...wish we could live on that side. And, take the class whenever you can save up to do it!

Working Hard
I took the class 3 years ago and this summer began construction on a three sided addition to our log cabin which was built in 1926. The walls are done, (12'4" high, and we will be doing a roof next. Our cabin is in the north part of Minnesota's Iron Range. For anyone looking for logs, or log transportation, John Ostendorf in Effie, MN hauls full logs, as well as acting as a broker for people looking for logs.

Good to know...gotta start building up a list of resources. What kind of logs have you found? it seems that white pine are not as plentiful as the red pine, but I could just be in the wrong areas too...oh, and ditto, let's take a look at that addition.

Hello Shannonbeth. We live in Eden Prairie MN and will be building in Fergus Falls MN. there are 3 others I've seen on the Forums who are from MN but I've never seen them post on the 'so who's from MN' forum questions so not sure they want to be known. maybe they like their privacy; I'm not sure. Anyway very glad to meet a fellow Minnesotan.

attacked me several times as I tried to make my way through your state. Perhaps I hit it just right but I'll swear I've never seen anything like it. I think I lost 20 lbs in two days and nights. You're of hardy stock if you can build and live around the beasts that I fought.

Lol. They can get pretty nasty here. I know the city i live in sprays for them but i'm not sure if they all do or not. Guess that's 1 of the drawbacks of having so many dang lakes. ~Shannon~

Shannon, I have a friend from the June class in MN. He goes by 'vermilion' on this site. He's already got his logs. That's the only one I know of at the moment.

I'm from Minnesota. Afton to be exact. I will be building near Aitkin on 40 acres. Have you taken the class already? I'm debating whether to sign up for Vegas as money is tight...
