Need to build a fence.

My dog is jumping my four foot high chainlink fence. I need an inexpensive way to keep him in. I thought about an electric fence but the general concensus seems to be that they don't work.

'electric' fences pulse on and off, usually at a irregular rate. That way if you or the animal touch it, it zaps you, basically makes you feel really uncomfortable... then it goes off and you can pull your hand away.

Basically the fence goes off and on, off and on.

It isn't something that's going to kill the dog or the little kiddies.

short fence

I have similar chain link fence, but mine was shorter is some areas because of the landscape. I wired lattice like this http://www.ryanforest.com/lat_privacy.html to that one area it comes in 5' x 8' pannels and seemed like the cheapest easiest solution. Probalby won't last as long as a new fence but my lab has calmed down in the last year or two. He is now almost 5 and doesn't jump nearly as much or as high.

Ah yes, chubbycuawhatever - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chupacabra (Stricking resemblance to my ex-mother-in-law!)

Very similiar, but much more menacing than the Arizona Jackalope -

I hope to never run into them when building my log home.

Mythical (?) Mexican and/or Indian critter. Don can help me... doesn't it translate to 'goatsucker'?

Our friend who helped us build our house was always talking about the chupacabra.... but we love ours so much we call it "chupacabrito". :D Every odd happening just reminds us that it's there, and all's normal.

There in Arizona, you MUST have them, too.

If it's an urban area, (you don't say how far outside Baltimore you live) I think I would just go with a taller fence. 4' won't keep many breeds of dogs in, or many folks out where I live now.
The old saying is "good fences make for good neighbors" and I tend to agree.

I still think the fence charger is the way to go, my dogs wont even lean on the fence now. before they would climb over. I'm not talking about one for cattle but its smaller low voltage for dogs, took me about 30 minutes to put in, I used yellow wire insulators on the fence so they "mark" the wire, it runs off a standard 110v receptical and will reach 1 mile, it took about 3 days and the dogs got the message, now I have it off. I have let my self get shoked and it was no where near the cattle fence "shocks" I have had.

The collor worked on my 20 pound cat

They worked but ate up the batteries fast.
It was like ever 2 weeks but keep the cat out the kitchen for some time.
After i took the collor off he started getting under foot again.
My cat feches like dog also. Go to vegas circus circus dam cats can do same as a dog just hard to train.
I never had the collor beeping near the microwave but i did live in a condo and the area protected ment up above alos so that made it a pain.
It was hard to judge the distance on the dial built on the inside model.
Ok my 2 cent ore one haha

electric fence

Hi,
We thought we had the problem all sewed up for our dogs too when we bought one of those wireless electric fences with the collar and had a doggie door put in...not so much.........
The dogs freaked out totally when we tried to train them. Wouldn't go near the fence that's true, wouldn't leave the porch! Then the collar started beeping everytime the dog got near the microwave or the TV.
For us it was a big waste of money.

Electric fences and kids.

Go ahead and build the fence.

Kids are trainable too.

ZAP!!

WHHAAAAAAAAHHH!!

If I wanted to take time to train my dog I'd just train him not to jump the stupid fence. From what I've heard the batteries on the collar may go dead or if the dog is high energy he'll just run through it........

........my dog is very high energy. I think I'll just have to build a new, higher fence.

The underground fences work but will take some effort on your part to train your dog about the fence. Most of the makers include either a video or detailed booklet instructing you on what needs to be done. If you follow the instructions right it will work but if you slack off, your done and the dog will run. I have sold a bunch on Ebay and found that those who went by the book were very happy with their purchase. Chris.

Somasoul--

We've not done "invisible fence", but the only big drawback I've ever heard is that IF they go out, sometimes they dno't want to come back in. Not sure how true that is, but that seems to be the conventional wisdom of those who don't like them.

As for electric, I think I'd be with you on that, especially with small kids. We had to board our dog when we went up to Washington for the seminar at Skip's and I stumbled into an electric wire at the top of a fence at the place we boarded him, going down some adjacent steps in the dark. Whew... not inhumane or anything, especially for big critters with fur. But I'll tell you, my finger was swollen and numb for an hour

My mistake, I guess, though there weren't signs. In daylight, I would have seen it, I'm sure. Not sure I'd want one in a yard near my house... or near my small children. Just on general principles. We have had lots of experience with electric fence at friends' who have farms, though. Great tool under those circumstances.

I DO have to say, though, I think it might convince even our hard-headed determined dog to stay in.

I have used electric fences for years. it will work if you do it right, most units come with install instructions, pay close attention to the grounding requirenments, thats where most people mess up, if its grounded wrong it will not function correctly and can damage the unit, but over all it is a simple concept and is effective. cost around 30-60 bucks depending on your unit, plus wire and insulators. Hint: after its in tie ribbon onto wire after a few "zaps" alot of animals will respect a wire with a ribbon even if its not hot..

A good electric fence will work as long as it is set up correctly. Check with your local feed/farm store or go on line for how to's for good fencing. Once the dog understands that it will make him "feel funny", he won't jump or go near the line. The added plus is that you can put little signs on it stating "I'm Hot" and it will keep the rest of the world from coming in. And you don't have to keep on all the time, the dog will remember. Chris
