Our nonprofit needs to sell a $15,000 log cabin - any ideas?

Hi! I work for a new thrift store that specializes in building materials. Construction & demolition waste makes up over half of the solid waste in the U.S., so our goals are reducing construction waste, as well as making repairs more affordable for homeowners & small businesses and creating jobs in economically-depressed neighborhoods.

About half of our donations come from homes that are deconstructed, when a crew takes apart an old building by hand rather than demolishing it. It is cheaper for the property owner, and it reduces waste and preserves historical architectural items.

Well, we had a beautiful 80-year old, 1,100 square foot cabin donated to us. Everything from the logs to the bathroom fixtures were carefully labeled and packed into two shipping containers (currently at our warehouse in Maryland). It was appraised at $100,000 without the land. We'd like to sell it for $15,000, because we've been told that the logs alone are worth at least that much.

We're a brand new organization, and very small and low on funds. This cabin is a terrific opportunity for us, because if we can sell it, the funds will help us make it through this first summer. It will also help tremendously with publicity, because several papers have said that they'd like to interview whoever buys it.

We've tried to advertise on Craig's List and Ebay, with just a few nibbles. We wasted several hundred on newspaper advertising that yielded nothing. So...could you help us? Do you guys have any ideas of a better way for us to market the cabin? Or do you have suggestions of people who might be interested? We would really appreciate any help you can give us!

Thanks so much! :D
Ruthie

I think you've made a good decision placing it right here on LHBA.

Hey chadfortman! Sounds like a deal almost too good to pass up, eh?

It may help you to put a link to pics of the cabin

Thanks!

ah, yes, pictures...okay, here is a link to our just-expired ebay auction, with lots of pics. I am also in the process of putting some pictures on our organization's website so I'll post that link when it's done.

Looks like a scandanavian chinkless with saddle notched corners. Not sure how much advantage it would have for members from organization (just my opinion.)

Not to sound snooty or disrepectful in any way - It's just the way I am.. .... but...

Change the 'flavor' to free, offer it for a tax deductable contribution (I'll give you a 100 bucks if you pay for the shipping), or offer it through a raffle.

Can't habitat reassemble it for someone?

(Hey timheger - it has your classic radiators you've been looking for!)

If it's been around for 80 years, the workmanship must have been pretty good.
