The path to freedom is many steps. Becoming a LHBA member and building your own loghome is one part of the overall picture. Why not dig deep into your heart and resurrect those old DNA molecules that know how to kick the human spirit into survival mode. It is STILL possible and it can be YOUR reality. It is my opinion that some (if not all) forms of modern techology have hurt us and could easily cause more problems down the road. Some things were already perfected by our Creator and they didn't need improving upon. I think maybe we should take a few lessons from the past, keep things simplified and get back to "basic living" and homesteading. Here is a inspiring 10 minute video. Kola

Great video

With the space they have to work with, it's very inspiring. I hope to grow my own independence as well, starting off small and not getting over my head, and see where it leads.

One thing that isn't covered in there case, (though roughly alluded to) was meat. In that urban environment, I doubt one would be allowed livestock. But I did recently talk to someone who does things on an intelligent level. For a few hundred bucks, each year this person goes in with three others, and purchases a local farmer's (all naturally raised) cow for slaughter. It all goes into a freezer and carries them through the entire year. Way cheaper than the supermarket and you know where it came from and what you're getting. (he said he can go over and see the farmer's operation any time) To top it all off, you're supporting the local economy.

So, even if you can't raise your own livestock, you can often come to an arrangement with someone locally who does. I have two homes within a few houses of me who sell fresh chickens and eggs. And anyone telling you that you're taking a risk buying chickens & eggs from some local farm, versus buying supermarket that gets theirs from a govt "regulated" chicken farm, well that's a load of bunk. Does anyone believe some raising a couple dozen yard chickens is riskier that some corporation raising thousands of chickens in concentrated chicken houses?

Quiz: Where would you expect disease to be most likely to occur?

answer:
is it picture #1 of the overcrowded prison?

Rod, years ago many people did not have much land for large livestock. Many raised smaller animals like goats or pigs. And yes bartering with a "circle of friends" is advanatous. Up at my land I have already met folks selling their homegrown goodies (eggs, bread and produce etc). They just plop a sign out by the road and giddy up ya go!

By buying from the mom amd pop places, I find that you will meet some of the nicest folks who btw have many of the same interests as us LHBA'ers. It's a win-win for all of us.

Out here I usually hunt or I will go half or thirds on a whole elk, buffalo or cow and freeze it. I recently met a customer who does hunting guides where hunters only want the head for trophy and don't want the meat. The owner usually delivers the meat to homeless shelters or to anyone who wants it. This guy gets moose, caribou, elk, buffalo, mountian lion, bear, you name it!

Now if we can only keep Big Gov otta our "right to contract" with our neighbors we'd be one step closer to Heaven on earth.

It may already be too late.

For a while now in the US, big corp has be lobbying big gov't to implement microchipping of all livestock, regardless of size or purpose. They have been trying to pass this as law under the guise that it will promote safer food for everyone by allowing the gov't to know the whereabouts of all animals. The law would require you to report anytime an animal leaves your property.
If this passes into law, likely more and more small livestock growers will abandon the practice and your only choice will be Big Ag grown garbage.

This is something that may also become reality in Canada, I actually know a person who has been working on new technology for the process (how do I tell him he's an idiot without hurting his feelings).

There may be a black market pretty soon for unregulated meat.

Sigh... anyone know a small island I can move to?

I saw goats in that video. But they also said they were vegetarian, so I imagine they are making cheese with the goat's milk.

A guy here in PA got $30k worth of his stuff taken and was arrested for selling raw milk directly to people on his farm.

It's insane.

thugs after the Amish

Yes Larry, Big Gov is busting the Amish people in PA as well!

You are prolly right about goat cheese and milk and BTW its delicious. There are different forms of vegetarians, ovo, lacto and then strict vegans but I love my meats.
I was a strict vegan for almost 3 years (battling cancer). I refused chemo and radiation but I desperately needed 3 surgeries and underwent that nightmare. Afterwards, I still refused the chemo and rads and went to Mexico and did The Gerson Therapy Program which is outlawed in the US. I have been in remission for almost 5 years. Yea!

And now I can enjoy meat and dairy!

I guess you're familiar with this site?

A small island? Ever look into one of the 7,000 Phillippine islands?

Great video, Kola!

Excellent video. As many here are interested in growing their own food and staying healthy, here is another great website: www.westonaprice.org Lots of excellent information. I used to buy all my milk--unpasteurized and unhomogenized--directly from the farmer. It was the most beautiful looking milk I ever saw! Truly. They say that when the grass is very green like in early spring and late summer/early fall, the cows produce more cream. And it was totally true! If you are interested in purchasing meat from area pasture fed/home-based farms, check out: www.eatwild.com I was a bit leary about drinking raw milk, but I was never sick once in the three years that I drank it. And I did know the farmer, and knew he was fastidious about cleanliness.

Kola, thanks for the video, it showed one of the 3 major's people need to survive. If you own your land and was capable of paying the tax man every year, what else would you truly need, medicine is a must too.

1. Shelter
2. Food
3. Water

Here's the other 3 major's

1. Guns
2. ammo
3. tv LOL :-)

Don't forget

Weather radio. I found that one item to be really helpful while I was camping up at Winterwood last summer. We had plenty of warning about the thunder boomers coming over those hills and made sure all the tent pegs were tight before we turned in.

Oh man, I hadn't seen the Meatrix in a long time, so I watched it again for fun...along with Meatrix II and Meatrix II 1/2...then a bunch more posted by Free Range Studios. You Star Wars fans really have to see "Store Wars"...Then I remembered one of my favorite off-the-wall caller request songs from a local radio station a few years ago, "Cows with Guns."

Enjoy! And may the Farm be with you!

Chick pix

In regards to Rods chicken pictures...

Of course the thin athletic chickens at the rock concert ( first pix ) are having way more fun than
the six over weight ones ( second pix ) who stayed home because they couldn't get a date. :-)

Here's a pix of my sisters chicks.
