I was looking at craigslist last night and found some poly coated rebar in my town for .10 a foot. I will propably learn this in class but I was wondering for one can I use poly coated rebar when I build and if so is it a good buy. I appreciate any advice and I'm not starting anything until I take the class I'm just keeping my eye's open for good deals on universal materials between now and then. Thanks, Chad

Rebar price of .10 a foot...

HD or Lowe's sell 20 foot stick of rebar for 4.99 a stick.
Do the Math - 25 cents a foot for uncoated...
Good luck - great price.

they don't have lowes/HD. I called the local HW store, and they referred me to the local guy to buy it from... 12/stick! I got some down this way for ~2/stick. I'll be trucking it up.

More rebar

I just found the following on craigslist:

REBAR#3GRADE60 20' 266PC $625.00 DELIVERED PRICE
REBAR#4 GRADE40 20' 150PC $625.00
http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/mat/1027369504.html

That comes out to about 20¢ per foot,  probably less if picked up.  I think this is a good price.  What do ya'll think?

It's in Manassas so, Chad, you might be interested.

Rebar in Manassas

I live in Chesapeake and go to the Manassas/Fairfax area quite frequently for work. If you don't need it all, I might get some too. Thing is, I'm not building in VA. I'm building in Alabama when I retire in a couple of years so if I buy it here I'll have to haul it there when I move.
But if the price is right, it might be worth the haul.

150 pieces of #4 rebar would

150 pieces of #4 rebar would allow for 33 courses in a 30x30 with 12" average diameter logs.

Another way to look at it, you need nine 20' sticks for every two courses. (again assuming 30x30 with 12" logs)

I've been trying to find

I've been trying to find scrap, but contractors here are taking it all back to their warehouses in hopes of using it on another job. I was quoted $14.95 a few days ago, and then 11.95, and then 8.39....all for 20' sticks. Then I finally got ahold of the sales dude at the local Asheville precast. He'll sell it to me for $4.75 for 20' stick, and told me it's really come down in price the past couple months.

similar here.

I spent $3/stick here. I would have had it trucked in from closer to my build site. The one guy I called quoted me 12.00/stick. I decided I could ship it for the delta, so I found a deal on CL and went for it

#5 Rebar for .20/ft

I've come across some rebar for .20/ft but it is #5 rebar. Is this going to be too big to work with effectively?

It sounds like it's an ok price from what I'm hearing, but should I hold out for something better?

price per pound

#5 is almost 50% larger area than #4.

at .20/ft, that is $4/stick.

it will work great, just know that pounding it will be harder, (the 50% may not allow it to be pounded by normal automated means. You may have to either just pound with a sledge, or with a full on jack hammer.

anyway, $4/(#5stick) is roughly equivalent to $2.65/(#4 stick) pretty decent deal. You can get it for free, but if you have to pay, I suppose that is not bad.

I'm not sure how to get it free but I bet it has something to do with "take the class" lol
Seems to be a common answer. :)

I just paid for the May 30th class so I'll be joining you all in this adventure soon. I can't wait.
