Road access living in the back woods

Sometimes it can be a challenge living in the woods, just getting in and out ,this year it started with the loggers hauling the last of their logs out in the rain and destroying the road so badly I had a hard time in four wheel drive, then last Friday night we had a wind storm must have had 50 MPH gusts ,this is what I faced getting out

I think I could squeeze the Miata under them.

Yep, part of being rural is being prepared for anything. I'll take it over high taxes and having everything done for me though. You think that's bad, watch Les Stroud's "Off the Grid" and see what he has to deal with to get into and out of his property.

I just watched all of Les Stroud's video's I wish my road was as easy as his,he just has the wrong vehicle, pickup's are not that great in the snow,my old Chevy truck has a lift kit and 36" tall tires and limited slips front and rear it would go in and out of his place OK but not mine. When it gets bad I use my Samurai

Looks like normal windy day up where i at after a storm

It best carry a chain saw 24/7 where i at and chains and chains for your tires.
My nebors some of then wake up 4am here they do the road clearing for us ahah.
Looks like allot firewood ready to be cut and split to me on the road haaha
If you dont have chain saw ready always have heavy duty draging chain ready
Its fun living in the woods i love it 4 years in now.
I can hear the dam fire truck stuff from in town up here so loud.
But most the time so silent and great sleeping.
Your gone love it Rod your gone fit right in just like me hahaha

I'm prepared for almost anything including a little snow

Ragdump

Hey is that cheep insulation around your trailor that should hold the heat in pretty good and cost the best free ahahha
Looks like some nice trees to build a log home with and there free there.

Ragdump I've been

I've been collecting logs for a couple of years now, when you cut them down yourself it takes awhile

Now I really like those wheels!

ChainsawGrandpa's picture

Hey Ragdump, where did you find those wheels & tires for the 4x4?

I looked hard at a micro truck, but was thinking a Suzuki
with agressive tread just might save me a whole lotta money.
My top speed only needs to be about 10 mph. Is there
a conversion to regear the transmission?

Ragdump The tires are

The tires are Goodyear Terra Tires, you can get any Goodyear store to order them, rims are 15"x15",I use it mainly for the snow so I put tubes in them and screwed the beads to the rims so I could run real low air pressure. Another thing I had to do was move the valve stem hole into the center of the rim.I had a chunk of ice clean off the stock valve stem on the edge of the rim.I put 5.38 gears and lockers in the diff's you can also get lower transfer case gears but that size tire isn't real tall so most of the time it works good, sometimes in real soft snow it would be nice to have just a little bit lower gear. The secret to driving in deep snow is don't spin the tires so if you creep along you compact the snow as you go. The nice thing about the Samurai is it's lite and you can find them fairly cheap and they make tons of stuff for them. Mine also has a 7" spring over lift kit and power steering is also a must with big tires

Ragdump I just watched Les

I just watched Les Stroud's video "off the grid" I wish my road was that easy I get that much and more snow plus water holes grades to go up and down. A four wheel drive like his won't go threw much snow my truck has limited slips front and rear 36" tires and on board air so I can let my tires down to about 10 PSI then it does OK

But when it gets bad I use my Samurai It's always made it so far

wow

2 cents's picture

wow,
how long is your driveway?

drive way

ragdump's picture

Ragdump
That's not my drive way that's the road coming in,I usually have to drive 3 or 4 miles in the worst part some times I'm lucky and Pacific Bell plows part of the road so they can get to there Microwave towers if you look off in the distance you can see the green street sign that's my drive way

Wholly mackerel! Is that

rreidnauer's picture

Wholly mackerel! Is that the street sign? And is it a street sign that's normally 8 feet tall?

snow

ragdump's picture

Ragdump

Yes that's the sign but that's the worst I've seen the snow, this year there's only 2to3 feet there, but it did get heavy enough in on storm to knock over my 120 year old Cherry tree it was like loosing and old friend

Ragdump I've figured out
