Shifting into High Gear!!!!

I took the class in June of 2008 and have been obsessed and excited to get busy building. I've got an offer out on a piece of property and will soon be (fingers crossed) able to get rolling. I'll be able to get logs from the immediate vicinity if I'm nice to the neighbors. There's some good timber on my patch as well.

Iwould love to hear from others who have gathered their logs together from nearby. I'm trying to figure out the best way to transport them.

I have an old RV that has an awesome toyota 1 ton dually chassis and isn't marketable as an RV. I'm thinking I'd put the RV part on blocks and use it for sleeping on the site while I'm constructing and could rig up this chassis nicely as a log hauler with the addition of some racks and a winch. Has anyone ever seen or done something like this? I'm guessing an inclined design would be best and that I'd have the heavy end near the back and winch the small end up on a rack over the cab.

Alternatively, I'm wondering if a dolly isn't easier and safer.

I'm looking to build a 30x30 so I'll haul mostly 35' logs. I'm not too worried about complying with the highway rules that may frown on a 35 foot log on a 16' truck since I'll be going on country roads just a short distance.

My son will go to class in May so that we have two certified home builders. That'll be great.

HI there smithme2
I was in the class last June also. I tried to connect with as many people as possible but ran out of time , anyway remember the poor guy that missed his flight connection and missed the first half of the first day?
I think he was from NY. Nice guy .
Anyway what kind of trees do you have?
