Milling logs

I just returned from walking a friend’s piece of property, looking over the damage from a storm that pass through a couple of weeks ago.  Numerous mature oaks were completely uprooted.  My friend said I could have as much of the fallen oaks as I want for saw logs.  Many of the trees are 30” to 40” in diameter and are over 80 feet in length.  The main trunks are at least 20 to 25 feet and straight as an arrow.

I have no experience with log milling, but have always wanted to do it myself for my wood working projects.  I am researching portable saw mills right now, trying to determine if I should hire someone or make the investment into one.

The question I have is how soon must I start milling the logs  after they have fallen?

And should I invest in a portable saw mill or hire it out?

a place where all the EXCEPTIONAL LOG HOMES could be gathered

if you are considering new topics, I'd love to see a place where all the 'exceptoinal log homes' could be gathered. maybe similar to the 'student log homes' portion,,,, maybe not. thanks for your consideration:)

a HOW TO for posting pics

Rod has done a masterful job in one thread of explaining how to post pics.  I have tried in some others.  Seems to be a recurring problem, and it would  be nice if we had a sticky thread someplace that outlined the process.

Flag as spam button

Well I got to say LHBA really keeps up on controlling spam, but I still see a few slip by once in a while, and thought it'd be nice if users could lend a helping hand if there were a spam/abuse button. Perhaps it could be a feature limited to members only, if admin is concerned about inappropriate flagging by the general population.

Common topics

How about a category in the public forum for:
FAQ: Links to commonly discussed topics.

A list of common questions with links to the answers in the
forums. The private section links would somehow need to
be disabled to non-members.

People new to the forum generally repeat the same questions.

longer classes

I'm looking at joining the LHBA and taking the class, when I can find a date/time that works with our schedule. In looking at many different sites for log building schools, I am curious why the LHBA class is only 2 days? I haven't heard anyone say anything bad about the 2 days - really only great things. So if 2 days is great, what would a week or 2 weeks be? I'd be willing to stay and learn, and pay more for the time...

Just a suggestion

Have a great day!
