Self Sufficiency in Hawaii

I was awoken yesterday morning at 5:18 by my New Mexico relations. They said that we were going to have a Tsunami. This is before the rest of our state was awakened by the civil defense sirens that went off at 6 am...
I rolled over and went back to sleep. I had bought a number of 5 gallon buckets and filled them various staples, soy milk, other stuff. The only thing I was missing was a bath tub full of water.

As it turned out we had a two foot Tsunami at low tide which doesn't even bring it up to high tide.

But I am thankful for my preparations. I bought the book "Dare to Prepare!". There is a lot of duplication but the book is well worth the effort. I also am a member of this forum
http://www.frugalsquirrels.com/vb/index.php
that has a bunch of stuff that is useful in this effort.

If you have a walk out basement your root cellar is 90% finished. Add some shelves and bins and start collecting your provisions.
Good luck

I need a design for a reciprical pump.

I am thinking or a 3" PVC jacket with a 2.5" PVC piston working inside... driven by a rod powered with wind/ solar electric unit on the surface...with an o-ring and some kind of poppet/check valves.

Should be Cheap and easy. and able to pump up from 20 ft down to ~100 ft up. I imagine the pump unit would extend below ground, to the water (shallow well) .

I did a quick search for designs, but didn't find anything. I could make something work, but if someone else already has, then this is pretty dumb.

If anyone has links to a how to site, hook me up!

Sprouting seeds

I just harvested 3 quarts (radish, alfalfa and a mixture of legumes plus other small seeds) of sprouts. My lunch today was Manoa Lettuce, a tomato, a bunch of olives, sharp cheese, bacon bits, avocado and a ton of sprouts. Life is good.
I have been meaning to get my sprouts going for several years. So I used non-metal screen to cover wide mouth quart canning jars and then screw on the open lid. I put about 3 table spoons of seeds in the jars. I more or less followed the directions below. 6 days and your eating fresh sprouts that have real taste. Good luck...

Easy Sprouting Directions (for most small seeds)

Soak Put 1 to 4 TBS. seed in a wide mouth jar. Cover with mesh and secure with rubber band. Add water, swirl, and drain. Add 1 cup cool water and soak for 4 - 8 hrs.
Rinse Twice a day, refill jar with cool water, swirl, and drain. Invert jar and prop at angle in sink or bowl.
Enjoy In three to six days, when sprouts are 3 to 5cm (1 to 2") long, enjoy. Cover the jar with plastic and a rubber band, or transfer to a covered container, and refrigerate to store.

Being cheep on cell service

Ok i got tired being riped off by the cell service people.
figure 60 times 12 come 730 to talk not encluding on plans you run out minutes then you raked over the coals. If you like me tired being walked on by phone company try these i save and live cheeper and still yapping away

My newiest is pay you go verzion cell for 20 buck and 10 of it is the phone service.
They have 3 different plans on how they charge you used the phone mine the second one 2 bucks use for the day.
10 cent off hours verzion customers are free chat to other 2 buck for the day.
days off no call no charges i know that hard for some people that love talk.
Also if i top up my phone for 100 that cover for the year if i dont run out minutes and they give me 10 bucks on top that free.
Lower top up amounts dont last but 30 to 90 days and only give you few free bucks when you top up with like 30 dollars.
I do all my call most time check on people in same day since i paying 2 bucks use that day.

Ok i not to much on infomercail Billy M i do crack cocain buy this product.

Finding great deals

Occasionally people ask how I continually find great (or free) deals.
I really didn't have a solid answer until now.
Number one is;
I keep my eyes open all the time. In my head I have a constant
list of what I want, what I need, what will fulfil a use, and can I
sell, or trade a specific item I find.

When I find an item (from property, to pencil sharpeners) I start
to negotiate. This is the part I could never fully articulate until now.
I happened to see an article (link is below), and everything recommended
was something I was already doing. If you want to know how I
negotiate great deals, then take a look at the article. You may want
to make a copy to send on to other members as I don't believe the
link will stay active for too long.

Road access living in the back woods

Sometimes it can be a challenge living in the woods, just getting in and out ,this year it started with the loggers hauling the last of their logs out in the rain and destroying the road so badly I had a hard time in four wheel drive, then last Friday night we had a wind storm must have had 50 MPH gusts ,this is what I faced getting out

Edible Lanscaping -very long

If you have an area to plant, the following are things that I have or will have by next spring. If you have a lawn, you can do some interesting stuff with landscaping. If you live in the Northwest, I would suggest you look at http://www.raintreenursery.com/ It is a great web site.

Here it is.
E510 Boysenberry
A distinctly tart, juicy cross between blackberry and red raspberry, these large, red-black berries mature at up to 2” long. The harvest of delicious, aromatic fruit continues to ripen for up to two months. Try eating them fresh with cream or baking into a spectacular pie---exceptional. Trellis the trailing, vigorous canes. USDA Zones 6-10. full description

E572 Marionberry
Although thorny, Marionberry has such an incredible, rich flavor that many people prefer it to any other berry for eating out of hand and for making superb pies, jellies or juices. Plants produce consistently heavy crops of high quality fruit starting in July and continuing for several weeks. Not to be confused with the former mayor of Washington, DC. USDA Zones 7-9. Available in 4” pots. full description

FE575 Prime Jan Blackberry (Fall Ship)
Blackberries have just become a lot easier to grow! Introduced to the American gardener for the first time ever...an upright, free standing "primocane blackberry that bears ON FIRST YEAR CANES. For almost twenty years gardeners have enjoyed "primocane" raspberries like Summit and Dinkum. Allow the blackberry to grow for a season. Then each winter cut the cane just above the ground and allow it to grow back. At the beginning of September through the fall, simply harvest the fruit. If you wish, like the raspberries you can allow the canes to full
