just back from spending the weekend log hunting. Spent all day Saturday visiting 3 guys with trees to cut down. settled on a little smaller log for a better price.
the first guy we let with showed us trees ~20 inches at the butt end; straight as can be. hard for me to judge taper but looked good to us!! he wanted $4/foot minimum... leaning toward 4.5.
the second guy we met only had 30 trees he wanted to get rid of and they weren't as big as the first guy's and he wanted the same price or more (he said 'I hear their going for $4-7 per foot'). we crossed him off the list
the third guy had trees a little smaller ~18" for $2 per foot; we decided to go with him.
Spent a few hours Sunday marking 'our' trees found 5 with butt ends ~ 20" (RP/cap log candidates) and the rest were 16-18" at the butt end. again I have a really hard time judging taper but they looked really good. we'll see what they look like on the ground and work with what we've got!
he says he'll start harvesting the trees in 2 weeks. we'd better get started looking for guys with trucks to transport them the 115 miles to our building site!
over all a very productive and satisfying weekend! we're exhausted:)

Re: Weekend Log Hunting
Well guys, great to hear you got your first project's logs picked out! Looking forward to the taper info. Red Pine? This gives me faith in finding logs in MN. Congrats!

log hunting
thanks JP.
we got such a good deal and the logs looked so good that we marked enough for our garage this year AND the cabin; we wanted to be sure we could cash in on the good deal... weren't sure it would still be there in 2011 so we went for it.
and about taper, I still don't have a precise way of determining while they're standing but our butt measurements were done at BH, as there did seem to be quite a bit of taper from butt to BH. but from BH on, there really seemed to be very little taper. we're hoping for the best!!
YUP red pine. not ideal but not bad either:)
