We had hopes of using this in our new house, but I don't think it will fit. Works great ( or did in our last house where it was set up ). We are listing our house to move closer to the building site and realy don't want to move it again. It has oven, cook top, bun warmer etc. Lots of cast iron. It is not light. We know what it is worth but also want it gone. I would prefer to not help somebody that buys it load it. But might be talked into it $$$. We are in kitsap county WA, zip 98370. Probably not worth it for somebody to ship across the country.

It is a Pennisular cookstove, year ?????

Very cool stove!

I don't currently have a use for it. But I thought it worth mentioning how cool it is. (This also has the effect of "bumping" your post so it shows up on the homepage in that frame on the right for "new posts". For some reason, it doesn't show thread-starters -- only replies).

Cookstove Envy

Man, how can I suddenly develop a case of cookstove envy? I'm not even looking for one. I have dreamed of putting one in my cabin, though. I do plan to build just down the road from you in Mason county (near Hoodsport). Man, if I had a way to get it (i.e. funds, truck, maybe a whole men's gynmastic team to help move it, and a place to put it...), I certainly would.

Sigh...I can dream.

Cookstove Update?

Dave,

Did you get the cookstove? Ever since I saw this beautiful stove I've been researching cookstoves. It's surprising how much information is out there. The more I read the more I fall in love with them. I've pretty much decided I do want one in my cabin. Besides, at this point it looks like I'll be off grid for a good long time. And since I'm planning on a small cabin anyway, it will probably double as my heat source.

Dave, if you did get the stove, I'd love to see it in action some day when you get it set up. Keep us posted!

Cookstove cooking

A long time ago, my brother and his wife and two little boys were living off the grid on five acres of desert in Southern Arizona and had a wood burning cookstove. I was visiting with them for a couple of weeks upon my return from my military deployment to Southeast Asia when I learned what it was like to live off the grid in those days. Mornings were very chilly and it took a while to get a fire up in the stove to get the coffee pot going and water boiling for oatmeal. I guess that's why in the old days, they got up really early and couldn't be slaves to the clock. Life was much slower during those two weeks out in the desert. Doing anything with meal preparation took considerably more time. Cleaning was also labor intensive.

I'm not criticising a wood burning stove, but the reality of living with one is not as romantic as it looks even if it does become necessary.

Cookstove Resources

Here are a few articles and forum entires I have found informative:
.........."Loving a Wood Cookstove" - from Lehman's. Definitely take time to read the forum under the article.

.........."How to Cook with a Wood Cook Stove" - article on SSRsi (Survival & Self Reliance Studies Institute)

.........."Cooking on a Wood Stove - another article on SSRsi

.........."I Live with a Cookstove and Love it" - Another great article from Mother Earth News. You'll also see another handful of links to "Related Articles" on their web site.

Also, here are a couple of books to check out:
..........The Foxfire Book: Hog Dressing, Log Cabin Building, Mountain Crafts and Foods, Planting by the Signs, Snake Lore, Hunting Tales, Faith Healing, Moonshining - chock full of down home Appalachian wisdom, has a chapter devoted to cooking on a woodstove.

..........Woodstove Cookery: At Home on the Range - This is also available from Lehman's. I haven't read this yet, but will probably pick it up soon. It looks great!

That's it for now. I'll post more as I find them. Do keep us updated on your progress as well!
