I saw this add in a classified. They want 150.00 each.
"2 one ton chain hoists, Heavy Duty, very long chains, vertical drop, in very good condition. US made, about 10 yrs old, originally purchased from NW Tacoma Screw for building a log house."
Do these sound like the right stuff and is price good? Thanks, Lngbeard

price...

Given a one ton hoist at harbor freight goes for about 49.99 bucks - on sale for 29...
150 is a little steep, IMHO...

chain hoist

I called Tacoma Screw out of curiosity. The ones they currently carry are 1 1/2 ton Jet brand, imports, for $220.84 each. Still a lot to ask $150 each for 10 year old hoists, but if they are quality and if they're willing to dicker a lot you might still get a decent deal there. Let them know the new price and see if they'd go for two for that price? (if that's low enough for you)

Dave, is that a recent price at a store near you? Online Harbor Freight lists a 1 1/2 ton for $109 (plus whatever for shipping); didn't see a 1 ton there either so I would guess maybe that's a local item? This shows how much prices can really vary.

It's hard to balance staying on a budget and buying US made. I would guess the cheaper ones are made in China. We do what we have to sometimes to be able to afford to get by. I try to buy USA when I can find it and afford it, but it's not easy!

chain hoist

I went on-line. A HF one ton chain hoist was 49.99 with extra long chain was 60 something...
More importantly, I used a chain hoist on my well shed... It was a real pain...
I would not recommend chain hoist, It's just too slow...
Triple blocks are much better, faster...

Chain hoist

Thanks all.- Rocklock, your comments are very helpfull for a newb. Not only is cost a factor but knowing that a triple block set up works better than chain hoist is a huge benefit I gain from your hard earned experience.

Chain hoist

What chain hoist capacity is optimal for log lifting ?
What kind of rope is good for block and tackle, what material and what diameter, how long ?
Thanks !

As a carryover from another

As a carryover from another thread in the member section, HF is not known for quality. US made and 10 years old actually sounds like a plus to me. Those things will be holding weight over your body that you probably don't want to be dropped ONTO your body. Shopping isn't always about price. If they haven't been abused it would be worth dickering over at least-
